B2Space’s satellite launch solution is based on a disruptive concept combining a rocket and a balloon—termed “rockoon.” This stratospheric balloon platform lifts the rocket to 35 km altitude, above 99.9% of the atmosphere, from where the launcher is deployed. The challenge was to create a robust and reliable “Launch Tube” to house and deploy the rocket effectively under these unique conditions.

The Solution

CODEM’s engineering and manufacturing expertise were critical in developing the “Launch Tube,” a vital component of B2Space’s launch system.

Rockoon Concept

  • Stratospheric Balloon Platform: Lifts a self-operative platform to 35 km altitude, bypassing the densest part of the atmosphere.
  • Three-Stage Rocket: Deployed from the balloon platform, dramatically reducing launch costs and providing greater flexibility for satellite deployment.

Launch Tube Design

CODEM manufactured the “Launch Tube,” ensuring it met stringent requirements for housing a 122mm diameter x 1,980mm projectile to be launched from approximately 30 km altitude on a sub-orbital trajectory.

  • Load Transfer Frame: The “Launch Tube” is attached at key locations to this frame, which suspends during the mission.
  • Fixed Angle of Attack: The tube is oriented at an angle ranging from 42° to 78°.
  • Environmental Sealing: Utilises a “blast away” material fixed to an “End Cap” and a press fit with the subcomponent “Rocket Fairing” to ensure it remains sealed.
  • Composite Materials: The body is made from non-flammable, extreme temperature-resistant composite materials.
  • Thermal Management: Maintains a given thermal environment and prevents heat loss during the ascent stage at approximately 30 km altitude.
