CODEM Composites played a central role in showcasing solutions to the UK’s critical skills
shortage during a high-profile visit by Liz Kendall, Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, to
Peterborough College and University Centre Peterborough (UCP). The visit highlighted how
Peterborough is leading the way in developing skills, fostering innovation, and creating
opportunities that drive regional and national economic growth.
A standout moment was the spotlight on CODEM’s work in addressing the composites skills
gap, an industry-wide challenge that has persisted for over a decade. By collaborating closely
with local authorities, CODEM is actively bridging this gap, developing local talent, and ensuring
the UK composites sector remains competitive on the global stage.
The Secretary of State was joined by Minister for Employment Alison McGovern, Peterborough
MP Andrew Pakes, and Mayor of the Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Combined Authority Dr.
Nik Johnson. Together, they witnessed CODEM’s impactful efforts in aligning workforce
development with the needs of the composites industry.
Kevin Doherty, Managing Director of CODEM Said: “We believe that investing in the education
and development of our team is of utmost importance. We take great pride in having a diverse
workforce that includes individuals at the beginning of their careers, as well as highly
experienced engineers. Providing opportunities for growth and development to our employees
and the wider composite community is vital for the continued success and expansion of our
company and the industry.”
Work experience, apprenticeships, and vocational training form a cornerstone of CODEM’s
strategy to nurture and develop the next generation of engineers. By offering these
opportunities, CODEM is empowering young people to take their first steps into the workforce
and build rewarding careers in the composites sector.
As CODEM experiences a period of rapid growth, the company invites those whose values align
with its vision to join the team. As the composites sector continues to grow, CODEM remains at
the forefront of addressing its workforce needs, proving that targeted investment, collaboration,
and a commitment to education can secure the future of this high-growth industry.
